Grooving in Christ
Menggunakan Metafora Jazz dalam Melihat Signifikansi Kristus di Dunia
Abstract
This article aims to take a look at the significance of Christ in the world through the metaphor of jazz music. In theological discourse, there had been many studies conducted on the relationship between jazz and Christian theology. However, those studies are often focused on the metaphor’s relevance for the Christian ethical life. This article thus deepens the conversation through the research question: how can jazz metaphor amplify not just the discourse regarding Christian life as the body of Christ, but also the reality of the Creator-creation relationship mediated in Christ? I argue here that despite its significance to the Christian life, the discourse between jazz and theology should first begin with the relationship between jazz metaphor and Christ. To prove this argument, this article would first discuss how jazz methapor has and can be used for theology. Then, it would drive its attention to improvisation, which is one of the most essential element in jazz, and dwelve within its components that this article thinks can be utilized theologically. Afterwards, it would articulate how jazz methapor can be associated to the Christological discussion, and why this can amplify the discourse between jazz methapor and the Christian ethical life.
